Susan Poag / The Times-PicayuneWearing yellow Island Aid shirts, the members of the Jefferson Parish Council listen as they are updated by the Coast Guard and BP representatives Friday during a Jefferson Parish Council Meeting held in Grand Isle.
The Island Aid Concert to raise money for the town's oil-ravaged tourism and fishing industries will go on as scheduled Saturday despite Tropical Storm Bonnie.
The latest tracks show the compact storm's projected landfall shifting east of Grand Isle, said Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts, who helped plan the concert.
"It looks like we'll have a beautiful day with some air conditioning courtesy of 15 mph winds," Roberts said Friday during the council's annual meeting in Grand Isle. "The party goes on."
The council's Grand Isle meeting usually kicks off the three-day International Tarpon Rodeo, the nation's largest and longest-running fishing tournament.
But the oil spill prompted the rodeo, which brings more than 15,000 people to the tourism-dependent island, to be canceled for the first time in its 82-year history.
It will be replaced by the daylong benefit concert, which features Three Dog Night and LeAnn Rimes and begins at 10 a.m. on the beach across from the community center.
"Grand Isle is coming back whether it's from a manmade disaster or one caused by Mother Nature," Roberts said. "We're not going to leave these folks behind."
